Wednesday, June 5, 2024 – Today, Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) officially launched PHL WORKS — a program to inspire service excellence among the more than 16,800 badged employees at the airport. PHL WORKS is an initiative of PHL’s Guest Experience (GX) Stakeholder Council which brings together representatives from all the operating partners at PHL including the City of Philadelphia Department of Aviation, federal agencies, airlines, merchants, service providers and other tenants.

In May, the United States recognizes Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, honoring the significant contributions this community has made in America. One of the ways the Department of Aviation celebrates AANHPI Heritage Month and its diverse workforce is with the annual “East Meets Sweets” event. 

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) recently marked a significant milestone with the grand opening of its new Airport Operations Center (AOC), the state-of-the-art facility that replaced the former Communications Center at Terminal C. The AOC is a centralized hub where a variety of duties take place, including communications, Job Control (service requests), lost and found, operations, and security, with staff working in shifts to ensure a seamless and efficient operation. 

On Friday, May 17, the Department of Aviation officially opened the new Pavement and Grounds (P&G) Crew Facility on Island Avenue.

Memorial Day 2024 is just a few days away. This year, Philadelphia International Airport is projecting about 565,560 passengers will travel through the airport from May 23- May 28. The peak days of the holiday weekend will be Thursday, May 23 (105,870 arriving/departing passengers) and Friday, May 24, (102,930 arriving/departing passengers). This is approximately 29 percent more than Memorial Day weekend 2023 and 1 percent higher than Memorial Day weekend 2019 (pre-pandemic).  

As a Department of Aviation Co-op, I have many opportunities to learn while working alongside the airports’ engineers and planners. We assist with inspections and water sampling, as well as conducting research to inform engineering and environmental policy.
