PHL Safety Team Completes FOD Walks Before Start of Busy Summer Season

FOR WalkAs part of its ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe and clean environment, Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) conducted two Foreign Object Debris (FOD) walks during the first two weeks of June, on the airfield at Terminals D and E.

FOD can damage aircraft and disrupt airport operations.  Regular inspections identify and remove any potential hazards or obstructions from terminal gate areas, jet bridges, and other airfield areas including roadways, aircraft parking ramps and taxi lanes between concourses.

As part of their daily routine, airside employees conduct a thorough inspection to ensure that all areas are clear. FOD walks are a supplementary event initiated by PHL's Safety Department that serve as an additional measure to identify any potential hazards. The walks are part of the airport's Airside Safety Program and involve employees, tenants, and stakeholders walking designated areas to collect trash and debris. The Occupational Safety Department provides resources and equipment for the participants, including bags, hand grabs, and safety gloves.

During a FOD walk, employee volunteers work with Airport Operations officers to ensure a comprehensive andFOD Walk thorough assessment of the terminal premises. The walks are conducted at least twice a year, before the busy summer and winter seasons. During the June FOD walks, the PHL team collected over 500 pounds of trash and debris.  "We appreciate everyone's participation in helping to clean our airfield. FOD can have a detrimental effect on aircraft operations, and collecting and disposing of these items is crucial," said Milaris Florian, PHL Director of Safety Management Systems.

The Department of Aviation is responsible for FOD collection at Terminals D and E, while Terminals, A, B, C, and F are handled by the airline that operates out of that terminal. The Department of Aviation support the airlines in their FOD removal efforts.
