May 2022 Newsletter

A Message from the CEO Chellie Cameron:

Hi Team PHL and PNE,

I hope you are having a good spring season. The Division of Aviation has had cause to celebrate recently. Last month, we were

notified that PNE is now Pennsylvania’s fourth busiest airport for air traffic (up from sixth), following PHL, PIT and LAN. This is even with a 10-day closure last year while runway 6-24 renovations were being completed. Congratulations to the PNE team, led by Airport Operations Manager John Brewer, on this accomplishment.

If you were at PHL during the recent holidays, you noticed the terminals were extremely active, especially with the restart of service to several transatlantic destinations. The relaunch of the international routes is a major turning point, not only the in airport’s, but also the aviation industry’s, COVID-19 recovery.

As the spring break period was ending, we reached another pandemic-related milestone—the lifting of Federal and City of Philadelphia mandates that required facial coverings be worn in transportation centers, on vehicles and airplanes and in indoor settings in the City. For the first time in almost two years, face masks are not mandatory—but strongly recommended—in the airport.

When the emergency order necessitating face coverings in the airport was enacted on May 8, 2020, I don’t think anyone believed masks would still be a part of everyday life in 2022. But, as we’ve learned repeatedly since March 2020, the coronavirus is anything but predictable and a global pandemic will not follow a timeline. Thank you all for your patience over these past two years as we worked through recommendations, mandates and schedules that were fluid and changed frequently. While we are still in recovery mode, we are hopeful that recent developments will help restore a sense of normalcy.

The upcoming summer season will be a major test for PHL and our partners. The demand for air travel is reaching pre-pandemic levels, while staffing is a challenge for airlines and airports around the world. We continue to work to hire staff to fill key vacancies throughout our organization that will help us meet the returning demand.

Thank you again for everything you do for our passengers and the Division of Aviation every day.

Chellie

Rework Reminders

Vaccinated? Mask Optional

Effective April 25, 2022, all employees and members of the public entering City buildings are strongly recommended to wear masks indoors, in accordance with the Health Department’s guidance; however, it will only be a requirement to wear mask in the following situations described below.

Masks will still be required for City employees regardless of vaccination status in certain high-risk settings. Those include the following:

  • Healthcare settings (for example, City health centers or when providing medical care, regardless of the location).
  • Congregate settings (for example, City prisons and homeless shelters).
  • Entering a residence (for example, an EMT or social worker entering someone’s home).
  • Driving in a City vehicle when more than one employee is present.
  • All unvaccinated employees are still required to double-mask or wear an N95 or equivalent as well as participate in weekly testing.

In addition to masking, it’s important to continue to practice the following safety measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 by:

  1. Checking for symptoms daily by completing the employee COVID symptom screener.
  2. Staying home when you are sick, if you’ve tested positive for COVID, or have been exposed to COVID.
  3. Handwashing frequently.

COVID-19 reporting and quarantine protocols remain unchanged and still apply. Employees must email HR Safety at [email protected] to report any COVID-19 exposures, self-quarantines, and any related questions/concerns.

Communicating – as we have throughout the pandemic, we will continue to update you on the current situation and our related safety measures.

Information Security Update

May 5th is World Password Day!

laptop and phone with password

Passphrases

Passphrases can be inconvenient, but they’re important if you want to keep your information safe. Here are some simple ways to secure your accounts through better passphrase practices.

  • Make your passphrase a sentence: A strong passphrase is a sentence that is at least 12 characters long. Focus on positive sentences or phrases that you like to think about and are easy to remember and include numbers and special characters. On many sites, you can even use spaces.
  • Unique account, unique passphrase: Having separate passphrases for every account helps to thwart cybercriminals. At a minimum, separate your work and personal accounts and make sure that your critical accounts have the strongest passphrases.
  • Use a password manager: Password managers store login credentials so you don’t have to remember your unique passphrases for every site. Many will also generate strong passphrases for you.

Multi-Factor Authentication

Your usernames and passphrases are not enough to protect key accounts like email, banking and social media. Multi-factor authentication, also called two-factor authentication or MFA, is a security feature that allows you to use two types of credentials when logging in to an account.

password, proof, access

Multi-factor authentication can help fortify your online accounts by enabling the strongest authentication tools available, such as biometrics, security keys or a unique one-time code through an app on your mobile device.

Many email services offer strong authentication on an opt-in basis. Ask your financial institution, email provider and other online services if they offer strong authentication or additional ways to verify your identity.

For more information on securing your online accounts and other best cybersecurity practices, visit the National Cybersecurity Alliance website here.
