Explore Barbados!

This winter, Philadelphians can explore another Caribbean destination with new weekly non-stop service to Bridgetown, Barbados, offered by American Airlines. Every place in Barbados has a story. From the diverse culture to delicious food and fascinating attractions, every day unlocks a new discovery to be found.

Located east of the neighboring West Indies Islands, Barbados is home to four main towns: its capital, Bridgetown; Oitstins;  Holetown; and Speightstown. With its diverse and rich culture that includes West African, Portuguese, Creole, Indian, Irish, British, and more, Barbados celebrates many traditions.

In search of a trip to the past? Take a walking tour through Bridgetown, 1st and 2nd Street, Andromeda Botanic Gardens, and more. The Arlington House Museum is an educational three-story museum housed in a historic eighteenth-century building.

Experience a once-in-a-lifetime adventure ride down the Atlantis Submarines, viewing exotic fish, coral, and a mysterious shipwreck. Explore Barbado’s blue waters, with a swim, surf, or scuba dive.

Barbadian, more commonly known as Bajan, food culture infuses the likes of African, Indian, Irish, Creole, and British influences. Typical meals consist of locally caught fish or meats, sweet plantains, rice and peas, West Indian curries and rotis, and more. Whether it be a street vendor, or a five-star sit down restaurant, Barbados offers a culinary scene that has options for every taste.

“Barbados’ food is inspired by our multicultural heritage - As a former British colony, our delicacies have English and Irish influences, West African, East Indian and Taino. While many of our favourite dishes including Puddin’ n’ Souse and Cou cou & Flying Fish emerged from the resourcefulness of our people, others have developed over time to rise to the top of a Bajan list of top 10 favourite eats,” states the Visit Barbados

Barbados is considered the birthplace of rum, and Mount Gay distillery - founded in 1703 - is believed to produce the oldest rum found anywhere in the world. Bajan ginger beer and sea moss drinks are becoming a global trend on the rise.

American Airlines’ nonstop weekly service from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) to Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) begins November 9. For more itinerary inspiration and flight information, visit Where We Fly on PHL.org
