Last year, the Department of Aviation’s Community Relations team relaunched a new School Tour Program to offer local students from elementary, high schools trade schools, organizations and universities, a behind-the-scenes look at Philadelphia International Airport's (PHL) daily operations and potential careers. This Program gives students a unique opportunity to learn about various aspects of airport operations and include visits to the Ramp Tower, PHL Riverwatch Operations Tower located between Terminals A –East and B which provides a birds eye view of the entire airfield. The tours provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the airport's ecosystem, showcasing different areas such as concessions, PHL’s Exhibitions Program, and even simulated travel experiences. In February, PHL partnered with Frontier Airlines to offer "Flying with Frontier", a unique opportunity for students to participate in a simulated travel experience from check-in to boarding a real plane.
In these tours, students gain first-hand knowledge of the diverse range of aviation careers through presentations by airport leaders, including CEO Atif Saeed, who share their career paths and experiences. To date, the program has hosted 21 schools and organizations from Cheltenham Township, Pa.; Camden, NJ; Philadelphia; and Aston, Prospect Park and Chester in Delaware County, and international students through the University of Pennsylvania's Try Engineering Program. During the 2023-2024 academic year, a total of 15 elementary, middle and high schools and universities participated in the school tour program, with around 260 students taking part from the following:
Interboro High School
Frankford High School’s Culinary Arts & Hospitality Program
Frankford High School’s Aviation Program
Belmont Charter School
Blair Christian Academy
Elkins Park Leadership Academy
Shalom Mennonite School
Fleetwood Christian Academy
Tilden Middle School
Harambee Charter School
Boys & Girls Club of Chester
University of Pennsylvania
Temple University
In addition to school tours, PHL representatives participate in career day events at local schools and colleges. The airport has visited 13 schools, with staff members sharing tips for success with students and aims to continue its recruitment efforts by focusing on colleges and universities from across the country.
Through these programs, PHL is committed to developing the next generation of aviation leaders and providing them with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in their careers. “By investing in our youth, we are ensuring a bright future for the aviation industry and for our community,” said Keesha Lane, Director of Community Engagement.
