Community Relations

Discover the Hidden Gems around PHL and PNE Airports nestled right in the surrounding neighborhoods. Our airports take pride in our collaboration with numerous communities and partners, such as Northeast Philadelphia, South and Southwest Philadelphia, Eastwick, and Tinicum Township. PHL and PNE engages with our neighbors and community business partners regularly via meetings, programs, and events.

Community Meetings

The Airport’s Community Relations team is fundamental to PHL-PNE’s efforts to remain proactively cooperative with the public to keep open lines of communication between PHL, PNE, and members of the surrounding communities we serve and impact. Outreach efforts provide an opportunity to have direct contact early and often with airport neighbors so they can stay informed about airport happenings.

We attend community meetings, join planning committees to help organize community events, collaborate with stakeholders to address issues impacting the community, and deploy surveys to identify priorities and solicit key information.

Another very important component of our engagement includes a Community Participation Plan (CPP).  The CPP encompasses a diverse and inclusive range of communications, outreach tools, and methods to involve community members and partners in early discussions of project and program planning and problem-solving.  Establishing meaningful public involvement can reduce inequities and enables PHL-PNE and our communities to make better-informed decisions through collaborative efforts and improve the decision-making process.  More info about PHL’s CPP will be made available soon!

Community Programs and Events

Southwest Initiatives for Neighborhood Growth (SWING)

The objective of this program is to grow stronger relationships with PHL’s surrounding neighborhoods through impact-driven engagement and connectivity to resources. For the better part of a decade, PHL-PNE has developed and implemented a series of outreach and training programs designed to increase diversity in jobs, contracting, and procurement opportunities. PHL-PNE is committed to assisting its neighboring communities.

Community Beautification

PHL and PNE offer benefits to surrounding communities through beautification.  For instance, PNE is home to The Butterfly Memorial Garden. This garden is governed by Compassionate Friends of Northeast Philadelphia. The garden was constructed in 2003 to honor children and youth who have left this earth prematurely. It is designed to be a place of reflection and peace for grieving families.  There is also a perimeter path on the grounds of PNE as well. The path is heavily used by many residents who walk/run the path daily.

PHL is home to the largest community garden in Philadelphia. Eastwick Community Gardens and Victory Gardens are located at Bartram Ave and Island Ave in Southwest Philadelphia. The site provides an urban garden space for dozens of local gardeners and visitors.

Wetlands Project at FDR

The Wetlands Project at FDR plays a crucial role in supporting the West Cargo Project by relocating 20 acres of disrupted wetlands from West Cargo to FDR. This initiative will offer refuge and forage opportunities for wildlife, fostering biodiversity, and delivering various ecological advantages like carbon sequestration, invasive species removal, and the restoration of rare native species in Pennsylvania. In essence, the Wetlands Project at FDR not only supports environmental conservation but also enriches the park's ecological diversity, educational value, and overall sustainability.

PHL completed a tide gate replacement project on Tinicum Outfall by the Delaware River just beyond the perimeter of PHL’s western boundary in Tinicum Township. The project benefits Tinicum Township residents by reducing the risk of flooding in their community, while improving critical infrastructure for the airport.
