DARKMEAL: LONG BOI
DARKMEAL: LONG BOI
Terminal C

Philadelphia artist Darkmeal is known for his street art—small paintings created on United States Postal Service mailing labels. His sticker art can be seen throughout the City which has a reputation as having one of the most vibrant sticker scenes in the country. Philly overall, has a culture of high quality, robust street art that also includes wheatpasted imagery, yarn bombing—where everyday street objects are crocheted like bike racks, light poles, and parking meters—to hand-painted walls.

Darkmeal’s mini street art paintings have been described by Street Dept contributor Eric Dale as “dense and explosive abstract stickers with a distinctly Philly texture.” Stickers continue to be Darkmeal’s primary form of expression. He says that his sticker art “explores the traditional letterforms of Philadelphia graffiti, known as the City’s handstyle…which has naturally found its way into my work.”

Here, Darkmeal has captured that same energy, motion, and skill seen in his sticker art. His fluid, vibrant, fast marks remind me of spin art where centrifugal force quickly moves wet paint outward resulting in colorful abstract layers. Similarly, Darkmeal’s work erupts from within particularly at such a large-scale where the dynamic colors and powerful bold markings become immersive.
