In 1996, photographer Byron Scott started to work on "Black Diamonds," a collection of photographs, stories, and archival materials that document the experiences of African-American railroaders in the 20th-century. He was always interested in the railroad. His grandparents, relatives, and even he, for a short period of time, worked on the railroad. Scott enjoyed hearing his family's stories so much that he began to compile other stories of African-American railroad workers. He has conducted over 100 interviews, shot hundreds of photographs, and has traveled nearly 30,000 miles to bring these untold human stories to our attention.
