Philadelphia artist Andrea Packard has worked in a variety of media including painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Her most recent body of work is based in the technique of collage where images and materials are juxtaposed, often in layers, to create new meanings and unexpected visual experiences. For Packard, collage is a fusion of painting and printmaking as she incorporates pieces of handmade and painted papers with fragments of prints and fabric. Working from direct observation as well as memory, Packard creates complex compositions intuitively layering and combining elements to create images of wooded landscapes. Up close, the density and variety of the surfaces are visually mesmerizing and the once perceived realism is transformed into abstract shapes, patterns, colors, and textures.
