Philadelphia International Airport Expands Video Surveillance Capability
New Cameras To Monitor Screening Areas
PHILADELPHIA – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced today that it is providing Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) with approximately $4.9 million to acquire new closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) as well as recording equipment and upgrade some existing components. The funding comes from an appropriation bill for specific facility modifications project. Philadelphia International was one of nine airports to get funding in FY09 for CCTV systems.
“Closed circuit television is an important tool in detecting security threats and keeping passengers and employees safe at the Airport,” said Mark Gale, the Airport’s Acting Director of Aviation.“ Gale also noted that the new cameras are part of a larger, integrated security system at PHL.
This project is in its development stage and could take up to two years from design to final installation. The project estimates that more than 90 cameras and the associated recording equipment will be installed.
“These cameras complement the other elements of our security program, such as access control and law enforcement patrols,” said Gale. “Taken together, they help us provide maximum security for our passengers and employees.”
“We are always looking for ways to improve airport security,” added Gale. “This type of collaboration between federal and local authorities is vital to achieving that goal.”
